Enrolled Agent CPE

I got my EA license towards the end of July. I am a little confused on the requirements since I got the license in the middle of the year.

Should I be taking 2 hours of cpe each month until April 2009? I read this on NAEA website:

For those SSN ending in 4, 5 or 6: to be eligible for renewal for the cycle beginning on April 1, 2011, you must complete 72 CPE hours for the current cycle beginning April 1, 2008.

I am just confused on how many hours I need for each enrollment period since I got my license in July.

The two each month is I believe only until January. Then you will need to average 24 a year including two of ethics but you at least used to be able to get by with a minimum of 16 a year as long as your total for three years was 72.

Note that the above is what the IRS requires. I know that the NAEA requirements differ and if memory serves what they require is 30 a year. I believe that there is a procedure for getting a deficiency in one year excused and made up in the next year but there are only a few good excuses and you can't use this "out" in consecutive three year cycles.

Dany - I suggest that you contact Sam Matlick at NAEA (202)-822-6232 to explain the rules to you. In your initial year of enrollment, there are proration of total credits.
In addition - if you're concerned with the annual 2 hrs of Ethics CPE - don't worry - the EA Journal, which is a bi-monthly journal of tax related articles, comes with a 2 hr home cpe - where there are 20 questions with multiple choice answers based on the feature articles in the journal. The May-June edition each year is devoted to meeting the Ethics requirement.

Thanks so much for the phone number I will give that fellow a call. I will need to buy some CPE courses I believe. NATP has some good ones I would like to take.

When you join NAEA, you also join a state association, inyour case I would recommend the Georgia Association (of course!). And you'll then get announcements about the excellent seminars put on, esp next May or June's meeting over at St Simons Island. See you there.

What are the benefits of joining the NAEA?
I already belong to the NATP. Would it really benefit me to join another organization?

I was thinking on the CPE to go ahead and do two courses from NATP to cover the 16 credit hours per year.

Ea Cpe

NAEA publishes an EA Journal bi-monthly featuring a number of tax practitioner related subjects, AND, in order to meet your CPE requirements, for a nominal fee of $ 35, provides a home CPE with each journal. At year end, you get an additional two hours (for an additional fee) if you wish. Each year, the May-June edition is strictly geared to Ethics subjects - so by taking the exam with that edition, you meet your Ethics CPE requirement. Don't have to travel anywhere.
Each week on Friday afternoon, you get e-mailed an EA@lert - that is an update of tax related information about major IRS developments, regulatory updates, state tax issues, state licensing issues, news on EAs throughout the country, membership programs, state affiliate news.
When joining NAEA - you're also joining the state affiliate (as it's a joint membership) and have the benefit of meeting fellow EAs at a local chapter meeting.
NAEA is also an advocate organization strictly for EAs and is constantly in touch with the Office of Professional Responsibility, has a Government Relations person on staff to answer any questions relative to ongoing changes in legislation and regulation.
Also - NAEA is the only professional organization that has a chat board, just like this one where you exchange information with one another. It's a VERY ACTIVE BOARD - there's ALWAYS discussion on there - so you're in touch with EAs all across the country.

"You must take 2 hours of CPE per month or part of a month for which you were enrolled to be eligible to renew..."

If you take correpondence courses other than NAEA, read the fine print because some CPE courses are not valid for an EA. They usually will say so, but you just have to make sure before ordering anything.

Because not all "CPE" during live attendance qualify for EA renewal. To qualify, a
course must be one that will enhance the EA's ability to represent clients and interface
with IRS. Thus a course in business law or computers does not qualify.

I attended a seminar for two days. the first day was forensic accounting, and that 8 hours
was wasted, as it did nothing to accomplish the goal.

Thank you guys for responding. Thanks Sam for the detailed explanation on the NAEA. As for right now I am not going to join. I am going to get the CPE courses from NATP. They do have them marked which ones qualify for EAs.
