    H&R Blocks

    Same sex return.

They say that this is a discrimination problem.

I can't help but to wonder though if the HR Block website will do a MFJ state tax return with MFS federal returns (where allowed). That would basically be the equivalent situation.

Sex may have nothing to do with it. Could the software handle MFS federal and MFJ state or MFJ federal and MFS state?

I have seen many software packages that can not split husband and wife for the state.

This is just poor software design by people with limited tax knowledge.

No its not. The professional version of the software H&R Block preparers use can do it. Both are the same software. Except that the "consumer" version has certain features turned off that the "professional" version can do. Intuit does the same thing. There are a number of features ProSeries can do that are turned off in TurboTax.

This is simply a case of price. You get what you pay for. Only we have an idiot journalist who wants to turn it into a discrimination issue.

          Example:

ProSeries supports Form 8594, Asset Acquisition Statement, used for when you sell a group of assets used in a trade or business. TurboTax does not. Same software company. Same basic engine running both. Except certain forms are missing in the consumer version, such as Form 8594. Is it due to poor software design by people who know little about taxes? Is it because TurboTax is discriminating against those who want to sell their business?

No. Its because one sells for $1,299.00 and the other sells for $29.95.

TurboTax doesn't have 1040NR or a lot of state and local forms either. Domestic partners call call me...ATX has the RDP for CA down pat. Even if I am doing three federal returns.
