How many of you guys where a tie to work?

clean shirt and slacks. The first 20 years it was suits & ties. The last 25 it has
been sport shirts and slacks. Never any short sleeves though. My arms look
like toothpicks.

Ties

I gave up ties when I started my own tax business. I work from my home, so I usually wear Dockers with a button down or polo shirt. Sometimes with established clients that have known me for years, I will wear nice jeans with a polo shirt. Of course, there are times when people show up unannounced that I may be in old jeans and a T-shirt. Guess that's what they get for just "dropping by."

No Tie

No ties. Just slacks and nice dress shirt. On Fridays, jeans! Saturdays when no clients are coming in, jeans with holes!

When I worked with a CPA firm in my community, coat and ties were required.

In a small town that means higher prices!

A tie and slacks when I was your age. Today, with long hair, some facial hair, levies, and a warn shirt. I honestly must turn away clients. Understand, though, I live in a small town (4000 pop) and the only advertising that works is word of mouth. It works for me.

Actually I don't really "dress up" to go to the office. I often wear nice pants/jeans. I don't like to wear dresses except to church. Sometimes I wear a dressy pants suit. That ususally gets comments from the customer like... "why are you so dressed up? do you have somewhere you have to go today". They are use to me being casual.

My first 5 yrs

I wore a dress shirt, tie and trousers. Last few years it has been dress sweater & dress slacks. Saturday appointments I sometimes wear ironed jeans and dress sweater depending on what type clients have been scheduled. Some clients I think may appreciate dress-up. I have an OIH so it's rather casual.

What's a "tie"?

I tie is a piece of garment that a man wears around his neck. Similar to shoe strings, it is designed to tie your head down so that it does not slip off during tax season.

I work for one of the large storefront chain firms, and the company dress code actually requires a tie (for men).

Some guys ignore the rule on some days; I don't. The requirement is not uniformly enforced in every office, and is probably not binding on franchisees. (I work at a company-owned office.)

I tend to agree that you have to tailor your style to fit your clientele. My office has a lot of low income and working-class clients. I don't really think the tie "alienates" anyone. But there's definitely a boundary. Some of our clients would probably be uncomfortable if I greeted them in $500 pinstriped suit. But that's probably the norm at some regional accounting firms.

I never wear a wristwatch, because I find it uncomfortable while working on a keyboard all day. But if I did wear a watch, it would be a $30 Timex. And I stopped using fancy-looking pens a long time ago. My desk always has three Bic ball point pens on it: one for me, and one for each spouse when they come in together. I guess it's just a gut feeling, but an expensive watch and a fancy fountain pen would almost certainly make some of my clients uncomfortable. It isn't so much that they would be intimidated, but rather that they might begin to feel that the socioeconomic gap between us would make it difficult for me to understand their financial life.

Thanks for the tip! That sounds very useful. I looked it up on my favorite fashion place, sears dot com, and man are they expensive! I'm going to take your advice and just use shoestrings around my neck this year.
