    Wearing ties

Has anyone who does wear a tie at the office have a client get mad and attempt to
grab the tie and choke you with it?
    Just asking.

        Me wear a tie?

I dress casual, I have a feeling many clients feel more confortable with me casual. But I will wear a tie when I have to run off to a viewing/funeral right from work.

Am I overdressing or are standards just going down?

I would hve done a poll, but I don't know how to do it.
I wear a shirt with S & J TAX SERVICE on it. It hangs over my chair and I put it on and do business---after I pull off and put on back of chair for the next day. I have different colored shirts with the writting different too. It is much easier for me than to dress up or worry about what to wear.

I gave up wearing a tie long time ago.

Certainly not in the office and last time was on board ship for formal night.

My wife has instructions. No tie in my casket.

Once someone offered to give me a sicilian neck tie. I immediately ran the other way.

                  Used to

When I was 27 I used to wear a suit or sport coat and slacks with a tie every day. About 6 years ago I started getting lazy and I would bring my tie with me to the office and I hardly ever put it on. In the summer I would wear shorts and a golf shirt on Monday's because my golf league was every Monday evening. Friday's I would wear khakis and a golf shirt. Then I started dressing down more and more. Now I wear jeans when it is colder and shorts in the summer. I do wear a tie 2 days a week during tax season (client appointment days) and I will wear one when I have to go to court or other occasions.
I would put a favorite quote in here, but it would get me banned from the board.

Well... as I sit here this evening reading this post (in the pajamas I have worked in all day) I find that you guys are missing the point regarding a tie. Yes, the tie makes your clients think "how much is this going to cost me?". Yes, and they are happy when you charge them just a little bit higher than your competitor as they think you must be worth it since you wear a tie. Its a good way to make an extra buck. But then you guys make so much you don't need that extra buck anyway.

My philospohy on dress is linked more to the occasion.

If at my office (ie second home) - snappy but casual/comfortable, more to the casual side if I have no client appointments (my clients don't 'drop-in').

Meetings at client locations - suit

Fieldwork at client location - depends on what I'm doing (if warehouse, then casual, etc)

First meetings and 'official' meetings of any kind - suit.

This would make me nuts. I'm usually jamming on some project or another and this kind of 'sword of damacles' hanging over my head would really mess with my head. (For whatever reason, in order to kick out the jams, I need to trust that I will have a certain amount of uninterrupted time).

Fortunately, my office is such that you can't tell if I'm in unless I answer the door. (Solo practice has it's advantages.). Knowing I have that option (to not answer the door) helps ease my mind.

In any case, my clients are usually polite enough to call in advance. The only ones who drop by my office are usually UPS/FedEX, 'lost' people, and people wanting to see the view (I'm at the top of a high office building), which is creepy.

                          Sounds like

what we used to call a "Klan" necktie as recently as thirty years ago.

                              What's a tie?

I haven't worn a tie since the day I left the corporate scene except on rare occasions and never to meet a client. However, once I wore a suit when I was a delegate to the State Republican convention in Dallas. I met one of my clients that afternoon before I had a chance to take off the suit. I don't think any other client has ever seen me with a tie.

One client came by unexpectedly the other day and I met him in my underwear. I don't make that a practice, but my wife let him in before I had a chance to get dressed..
