How many of you guys where a tie to work?

I wear one everyday, even on Saturdays during "the season". However, I have noticed that many of my peers locally are never wearing a tie, and half are wearing polo shirts and khakis to the office. I wear slacks, a button up shirt and a tie. Am I overdressing or are standards just going down?

I would hve done a poll, but I don't know how to do it.

    Shirt and tie

    Josh,

When I'm meeting clients, I wear a button down shirt with a tie and casual dress slacks. Occassionally, I will wear the slacks, shirt (no tie) and a sweater or dressy sweatshirt, if it's cold.

In the home office, by my lonesome, well that's a different story. Whatever I can throw on and look halfway decent is fine.

      Josh,

I never wear a tie unless I am in an audit or giving a speech.

I usually wear a polo shirt or other collared shirt no tie and dress slacks and dress shoes.
I call it business casual with an lean towards business. I do this mainly because I have a diverse clientele and I feel wearing a tie would alienate some of them. Say like my contractors or bar owners. So I try for a happy medium, and it has seemed to work.

My problem is I never know when a client's coming in

Many of my business clients just show up whenever, so I always have to be ready to meet with them.

But can't not wearing a tie alienate the one's who expect it? I guess there is no right or wrong answer, just preference and feeling out your sphere of influence.

            Usually jeans....

and t-shirt just like most of my clients. Once in a while button down shirt with slacks or khakis, but never a tie.

Josh I have any attorney friend who works for a rather large seattle area firm. They don't even where ties and they are representing multi-million dollar clients and businesses. Infact they wear polo shirts or golf shirts.

Maybe it has to do with me trying to build by client base and wanted to project the best face to the public, or maybe I'm just old fashioned (even though I may be one of the youngest members of this board at 27).

                  What's this gonna cost me!

If I was to wear a tie my clients first question would be How much more is this gonna cost me.

Josh I think you have to do what works for you. Also when you are young in this business clients do not give you a whole lot of respect. I remember when I first started. Maybe wearing a tie works for you and it more likely than not can't hurt to remind the client that you are a professional that deserves a certain amount of respect. When I first started I tried it wearing a tie and it was ok for awhile it did help convince clients that this kid was a pro. But after awhile I noticed when I didn't wear a tie clients just seemed to open up to me a little better.

I wore a suit and tie when I was 27

Now that I'm old and fat comfort is king. I wear a starched dress shirt and khaki slcks with dress/casual shoes. In the summer it's short sleeve dress shirts or polo's. When I was younger I felt the need to "dress-up" to be taken seriously by the older executives. The last audit I did the auditor wore jeans and a polo.

                        Dressing up

                        Josh,

I'm with sea-tax. You have to do what feels right to you.

Personally, nothing feels better to me than a nice wardrobe, which includes a very crisp, ironed shirt w/tie. There have been times when I would drop by the office to pick something up wearing torn jeans and an unironed shirt. Guess who's there! I don't like presenting myself to a new or old client like this, although, it's happened.

Also, I do understand sea-tax stating that he doesn't like to dress tight in front of casual clients. There is some good reasoning behind this.

Again, I think you have to dress the way you feel you confident and then feel comfortable with that.

                          Necktie

Never not even to church. Casual is the name of the game in Florida. The news people are the only people in ties. Redneck hit the nail on the head. How much is this going to cost?

This is what is running through my mind when I want to wear my comfortable jeans, but don't.

This is such a personal issue and both lines of thought have their merit, but from my perspective, I'd rather set my eyes on someone dressed nicely than too casual. There is a time and place for each.

                              Just my personal opinion.
