    Program for tax resolution business

    Hi All,
A colleague of mine is a registered tax preparer. They participated in a seminar selling subscripton to a tax resolution software (message for their name). This software uses your id.me account to access 2848s registered to you to review the client's transcripts and provide reports. There is a client who owes >$70k form not filing returns for 5 years. She believes this software will provide instructions on how to proceed with creating a Offer in Compromise. The subscription is $200 monthly. I am curious if you use or know about these type of softwares (tax resolution) - and do you see or find value in subscribing. I do believe there is a 'ala carte' fee beyond the subscription.

    Appreciate your response. Thank you.

Without even checking, I have to think it is a huge no-no to let someone else use your ID.me login, not to mention the practical matter of how would they handle the MFA requirement? Or are you saying that you log in, and then run the software to perform automated form filling and downloads from the web site?

Sounds like Canopy, here is a link to their tax resolution page:

Yes, if you do a lot of tax resolution, there is software that helps and streamlines some things. It may be becoming slightly less beneficial as the IRS has been improving their online abilities for tax professionals.

Yes, there is software that can help with an Offer In Compromise and can make it much easier than manually figuring it out and manually filing out the forms. However, there can be several 'tricks' and nuances for getting the best result for an Offer In Compromise, so the preparer would want to be skilled in the ins-and-outs of doing it and merely use the software as a helper. If tax professional is not knowledgeable and they end up completely relying on the software, I suspect that in many cases the Offer will be less beneficial than if an experienced person helps a client with the Offer. Sort of like TurboTax can prepare a tax return, but a tax professional can make suggestions and sometimes alterations to get a better result.
