NJ CPAs, a question about firm registration.

After seeing a post about firm registration I thought, "Oh shoot, do I need to do that??".

So I called the NJ Board and the person who answered was not totally sure of herself.

She pulled up a statute which said if you're not offering audit/attest services or putting "CPA" in the firm name then there is no need to register with the board.

She then said I should read the statute myself to be sure.

The services I offer are: Tax/Tax Planning, Bookkeeping, and Payroll.

    The statute is here: https://law.justia.com/codes/new-jer...ction-45-2b-54

Can any of you help me out with this? I read it a couple of times and am thinking I don't have to register but I don't want to mess this up!

    Thank you.

Here's a phone number of an organization that provides NJ Law & Ethics classes that you can ask - (973)-397-5619
I suggest you ask what the CE requirements are regardless of what services you provide. I believe that some hours of
Accounting and Auditing are required even though you don't provide Accounting Services.

      .
Not sure if you are asking only “Accounting” services or register a business in NJ? If Accounting” services see link:

“She pulled up a statute which said if you're not offering audit/attest services or putting "CPA" in the firm name then there is no need to register with the board.”

Also, not placing the designation “Public Accountant” in your letterhead (unless you met the grandfather definition to use that designation).

If you are asking if you need to register a business in NJ, you can find that information on the NJ.GOV website.

I think this is the information you are looking for - when you must register as a "firm"
