    Copies OR Scan

    Must you copy OR scan copies of the 1040 Return and w-2 and 1099's etc. or "neither".

    Off the top of my head I don't recall the exact rules, but there are items you're suppose to keep. Either copies of the returns or a list of returns you prepared, the 8879, copy B of the W2. I believe the minimum is 3 years. Doesn't matter if it's a paper or scanned copy.

        The requirements for EROs are clearly spelled out in Pub 1345. The W-2/1099 forms showing withholding need only be kept to the end of the calendar year the return was efiled. Digital (paperless) copies of everything else that must be maintained are acceptable.
