    EIP2 Notices from IRS

The delayed mailing of EIP2 letters is causing real confusion with taxpayers. I must have got half a dozen calls in the last few days where taxpayers just received the Eip2 letter and were wondering why it is not $1400 as promised. Are you guys getting similar calls from clients?

What delay? I saw one that was received back in the 3rd week of February, about a month ago.

The letter clearly says "second payment". Hopefully clients can count to three...

Letter 2 was easy to remember that they got it and the $$ amount. Letter 1 was the hard one to remember the amount. Wait a minute, there was no Letter 1.

I don't think all the letters were mailed/received in Feb. Various parts of the country had severe mail delays. I have a copy of a EIP2 letter that was Dated 3/5/21 by the IRS?

For those taxpayers who read the whole letter and figured out what it was about don't call us. It is those who read only the line "An EIP2 Payment in the amount of $ 1200 was issued..." that get concerned and start panicking.

The IRS is really late on these EIP2 letters. I received my letter yesterday, March 19, 2021. I received the direct deposit on January 4, 2021.

What are you talking about? Notice 1444 was "Letter 1".

Looks like underfunding the IRS was just the first step, now some leaders are on a campaign to destroy the post office too (unnecessary mail delays).

I had some clients that received Notice 1444 and some that received Notice 1444-B but so far none that received both. I have clients that did not receive/do not remember/did not keep any letter at all.

You are contradicting yourself. You don't know what your clients received. All you know is what they "remember" or what they tell you, which as you yourself state is not the same thing as reality.

I know people who received both of the TY2020 EIPs and who also received both notices.

I got the 1444 but not the 1444-B.
My son whom uses my address got both. The 1444-B arrived a couple days ago.

I know which of my clients put documents in a "tax" folder all year long, and none of those had both notices. I didn't get either notice. But the notices causing panic in my clients and phone calls to me are the ones arriving this week, almost three months after they received EIP2 direct deposited.

We could have helped answer those panicked calls if we had access to some database which showed what the EIP1 and EIP2 amounts were. Right now preparing a 2020 tax return is a drag when the taxpayer does not remember what they got and they are in the income range that the EIP1 and EIP2 amounts would have been reduced. I think I have 4 or 5 clients who are still "checking" with their bank what they got as a direct deposit from US Treasury in 2020 and 2021.

IRS should have allowed us tax preparers with a valid EIFN and PTIN access to the amounts in a look up tool. (Yeah I know we can pull transcripts, but that takes more time and effort and does not solve the immediate problem).

The IRS wants us to do a lot of work without providing us proper tools. I'm relying on third-party calculators, such as Forbes, Kiplinger, and AARP, and asking clients to research. Harder than it has to be and more time-consuming. The extra month is not going to make up for all the lost time.

Yes, if needed, I just use the Kiplinger calculators for each EIP.

I never got Letter 1 and believe me, I would remember it! We got a &%^%$# debit card and it took forever to get it into a bank account. For a time TP could look up both on Get My Payment (at least the dates) but I saw where that info is no longer available? AAARRGH! Many direct depositors had to go back and pull up bank acct info.

Some of my clients got the first 1444; a few even emailed it to me when they received it. I wish the IRS never took down that portal, incomplete as it was, it at least gave us dates for the clients to look in their bank accounts and proved we tax preparers weren't just making stuff up.
