    Treating RV as a home

    Never mind.

A home includes a house, condominium, cooperative, mobile home, house trailer, boat, or similar property that has sleeping, cooking, and toilet facilities.

Does this RV meet this requirement to be considered a second home? If yes then yes.

Apparently one factor is the couple can take their dogs with them (no pet boarding fees) and make weekend/holiday/vacation trips to the great outdoors.

What are your thoughts on loan interest? Do you concur that it will not be reported as "home mortgage interest" via Form 1098 but applicable interest **CAN** still be considered?

If it meets the 2nd home requirement then interest paid on that if not reported on 1098-int , is listed on Sch A other interest line with Bank info etc. Obviously the must have enough to itemize otherwise it is a moot point.

Wasn't essentially this same question just asked one day prior? Atsman even duplicated his response.

You might want to verify whether the RV is actually a second home, or instead a 3rd or 4th home. While property tax would still be deductible, mortgage interest on a home that is not a first or second home would not be, assuming it is within the TCJA limits and other requirements for personal mortgage interest to be deductible.

Do they live together? [not always stationed in same duty location.]

[edit] I suppose even if a rental is their main home, they can choose to treat the RV as a second home without taking into account other non-main homes they may have. I still wonder what happens though if each spouse has their own main home.
