    Contacting IRS

I have a client who is making a fixed dollar amount payment to the IRS to make up for unpaid payroll taxes. I know that some of this is penalty, interest and back taxes. There was an individual at the closest IRS office that had been dealing with the client. However, as I have learned, and was reported on the news this morning, the local offices will not answer the telephone and will not return phone calls.

Any suggestions as to how to get this information?

The IRS explanation was that because of budget cuts, they had to cut this out. My opinion - Congress was tired of the IRS and it's director telling them lies or avoiding the questions so they cut the budget. Now, the IRS is taking the approach that we will cut the services that upset the taxpayers the most so that they will pressure congress to restore the money they were spending on trips, parties, etc. Just my opinion>

Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

Mine too and the President will make sure the Republicans pay for this blunder! Wait till the taxpayers start complaining and the mainstream media starts covering it. 2016 is just round the corner!

Nothing quickly Thom, but...as long as he's making monthly payments it sounds like he's not in a hurry anyway (unless he's just curious). I couldn't get through for a client either last month, so I just wrote IRS a letter. Mailed it Dec. 1st; got the reply Dec. 31st. Unfortunately, it read "We're working on your account. In order to provide a complete response, we need an additional 45 days to let you know what action we are taking on your account..." However, I feel better knowing that something is in the works even though all human IRS agents are locked away in seclusion. A month here, a month there; things could be worse. Tell your client these things are complicated, take time, and you're working on it. Too, it makes the fee (assuming there is one) seem more reasonable.

All good things to those who wait.

IRS Budget Cuts Could boost our business

IRS Budget Cuts Could boost our business since the DIY's will probably have a hard time contacting the IRS for questions and letters they receive BUT we all must be ready for all the DIY's who want to pick our brain for free. I for one am ready for those DIY's. I am thinking of I charging $75/hour but waive it if I prepare your tax return for $$$. Your thoughts.

The other day I saw a flyer left by a Realtor and his friend who is a Mortgage broker. The flyer said you can save this much on income tax by having a mortgage payment of this much. No other details.

Thanks BB - The biggest reason that I wanted it now is that the interest could be charged to the 2014 expenses and my accruals have to be off on the amounts owed for payroll taxes. I guess that I will write them a letter, assuming they have not moved and left no forwarding address.
