I have a client who is making a fixed dollar amount payment to the IRS to make up for unpaid payroll taxes. I know that some of this is penalty, interest and back taxes. There was an individual at the closest IRS office that had been dealing with the client. However, as I have learned, and was reported on the news this morning, the local offices will not answer the telephone and will not return phone calls.
Any suggestions as to how to get this information?
The IRS explanation was that because of budget cuts, they had to cut this out. My opinion - Congress was tired of the IRS and it's director telling them lies or avoiding the questions so they cut the budget. Now, the IRS is taking the approach that we will cut the services that upset the taxpayers the most so that they will pressure congress to restore the money they were spending on trips, parties, etc. Just my opinion>
