This is probably of no use to anyone but I have always e-filed the 8332 and kept the original signed copy my the client file. I also input all information on the Sch D. I figure if the client is going to play with his/her investments....they are going to pay for the info being included on the Sch D rather than attaching or sending the investment summary by snail mail.

Neither of us have ever gotten a notice from the IRS asking for the original 8332 or further investment documents.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't believe the F8332 has always been e-filable.

I'm not sure I see the logic either of the input of all information on the Sch D, when it could simply be PDF'd, just because you want to make them pay to play.

On the same premise why not just mail the F8332 and charge them double for the extra work?

PDF attachments will be supported for electronic filing with Federal 1040 returns

As you create returns for electronic filing, ProSeries will automatically track attachments required to be submitted with the Form 8453 Transmittal for an IRS e-file Return (or you can check applicable boxes to identify attachments). If you would like to attach some or all of these attachments as PDF files you can now access that option for the Federal 1040 return under the e-file menu (either from within the return or on the HomeBase when the return is highlighted). The Form 8453 will automatically keep track of required attachments that have been attached as PDF.

Important Note: If you attach all required attachments as PDF the Form 8453 Transmittal for an IRS e-file Return is no longer required to be filed on paper. However if you choose to only attach some of the required attachments as PDF you must still paper file the Form 8453 with the remaining required attachments.
There is a limited number of docs that qualify for pdf attachment. I am going to post the IRS sites for attachments, business forms and individual forms. Look for it under "2012 Forms/attachments acceptable for efiling
        "

The IRS is already allowing certain PDF attachments, such as for Sch D multiple transactions. It is a valid observation that at some point in the relatively near future the IRS will likely be an electronic return universe for all matters.

But for now, I cannot predict what the IRS is "working toward" but rather feel somewhat compelled to follow the current rules for Form 8453 (and Form 8332) as cited in the IRS instructions for same.

There was no intent in my post that you don't do research and plenty of it. No need to take what I post so personally. It certainly wasn't meant to call you out in any way. I was just saying there has to be a list out there somewhere that addresses what forms can be efiled. I also, was just posting my experiences. I have gotten a letter or two from the IRS when I forgot to send a document and the 8453. It has also been my experience that when I include F8332 in an electronic filing I am yet to receive a reminder letter.

I thought the purpose of being able to attach a PDF is to avoid this mailing requirement.

            What say you?
Do you use ProSeries....they have an alert out (today) regarding not having to mail the 8453 and also the errors on 8867 that are causing problems. If not perhaps, a google search "IRS 8453 to mail or not to mail" might help
