RTRP Renewal - No CE Reporting to IRS Being Done This Year

We had a lively discussion about this over on the Unofficial ATX Forum, so I'll crank it up here as well. Has anyone noticed that CE credits are not being recorded for RTRP renewal for 2012? IRS says they aren't ready to receive the info from CE providers yet, and they don't plan to be ready until 2013. So they are just asking that RTRP's self-certify. You just check a box that says you: 1) have completed your 15 hrs of CE, or 2) intend to complete it by Dec 31, 2012.

I'm not suggesting that anyone self-certify unless they meet one of the two conditions. However, for anyone who wants to go ahead and renew, it's perfectly acceptable to renew right now as long as you plan to comply by year-end. And if you've completed your CE and are waiting for it to be recorded, it isn't going to happen. May as well go ahead and self-certify.

This also emphasizes the importance of getting a printed certificate of completion (or at least store a pdf) and not relying solely on the CE provider's erroneous statements that they will be sending the info to the IRS. They may be sending, but IRS isn't receiving. IRS says they may spot-check compliance after the first of the year, and they also require that RTRP's keep their certificate for 4 years.

As for "RTRP renewal", do you mean "PTIN renewal"?

Yes, PTIN renewal, but only insofar as it applies to RTRP's.

Even though EA's and CPA's also have to renew their PTIN, I don't know if this same "do it yourself" reporting of CE credits applies to them. I was just pointing out that the CE providers aren't reporting completion of CE to the IRS this year. (well, they may be reporting, but IRS isn't listening).

I was also pointing out that since IRS says they may spot check compliance, and since their own rules say we have to keep the certificates 4 years, it's probably important to print a hard copy or store a pdf of the CE completion certificate in a secure place just in case the system draws a bead on you.

I hope IRS could find better use of an agent than to check CPE'S.I think by 2014 when they have way less people to keep count of they will start keeping track. The CPE providers are reporting to them.

In the process of completing my EA CPE credits, and they are sending me a notice that they have submitted to IRS. Not sure how the RTRP reporting is being processed, yet.

Appears there is going to be implementation of CPE credits reported in the near future, for EA at least - RTRP?? much the same as my Insurance Licenses - which also ends up being through Prometric

Observation is that possibly Prometric will also be reporting the RTRP-EA courses eventually.

This issue arose on the other forum when I made mention of getting 15 CE's for $27.95 from Platinum. Someone questioned whether they were IRS approved (they are) and whether they would follow through on reporting CE's to IRS. And what a catastrophe would ensue if that happened.

When I responded that no CE's were being reported to IRS this year by any CE providers and that all RTRP's were to "self-certify", there were some naysayers. In fact I had gotten this info from Platiunum and then confirmed it on the IRS site. So as it turned out, the low-cost provider actually was giving the most accurate info regarding what was actually taking place with the reporting of CE's for the current year.

Well, not really. The CPE providers may be reporting to IRS, but IRS isn't receiving the info this year. IRS has no idea which RTRP's have completed their CPE and they are simply having RTRP's to self-certify.

Here is their link. I think they offer some sort of discount to bring the price down to $15.. I missed that, but still more than got my money's worth IMO.
