Can alien with USCIS number file?

My client married a woman in 2011 from Brazil who has been issued a number xxx-xxx-xxx by USCIS (formerly the INS). Since the numbers are not separated as social security numbers are, do you know if they can file a joint return with her number? If so, I believe it has to be paper filed. Never had a case like this. Thanks.

If she doesn't qualify for a social security number, she'll need an ITIN issued by the IRS.

Do you have any idea what that number is? Could it be a visa number? It sounds irrelevant, but evaluating it based on where they put the dashes is silly.

      USCIS number

I'm told it is just a reference number. She and hubby are meeting next week - final appointment to get the green card.

If issued, the green card will allow her to get a real SSN (I think). So either apply for the ITIN now, or go for an extension in the hope that the green card and subsequent SSN will arrive in time for the Oct. deadline.
