Why not just tell the TP, sorry this can't be done by direct debit, and let him/her figure out a way to pay the balance due? Seems like that would be easier for everybody involved.
paper file, direct debit?

Any time you refer a taxpayer to EFTPS, always warn them that it may take a week or two to get their PIN in the mail. Unlike many state systems, I don't think it's possible to go online to EFTPS on April 14 (or April 16 this year), and get your payment scheduled in a timely manner.Comment

Can you imagine this? A client called a short while ago concerned that her payment of over 4,000$ had NOT been directly debited .. Yet......!
So I explained to her that I had not over ridden the default date of April 17th.
Actually i didn't know there was a default date, but that's a software issue.ChEAr$,

My software doesn't have a default date. I always recommend a date a week or two before the due date in case there are any issues. The first direct debit I did was for my own extension being efiled a few years ago. I never do anything for a client I haven't tried myself yet.
Yes, there were issues, and I ended up having to send a paper check a few days late, since it was that amount of time before I got through to both the IRS and the bank to determine why the debit hadn't been made.Comment

There is an area on the return that allows a direct debit for payment. I haven't seen any restrictions that say it has to be efiled to be able to do this. A paper return is input into the IRS computer the same way one you intend to efile is...even when it is the IRS copying a manual return that you have prepared.
If you can get a direct deposit made from a manual return, you can get a direct debit also. I have done this on returns that required a manual filing because the extension for efiling had run out.Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.Comment

Debit with paper return

Can you let us know which "area of the return" allows this direct debit option for a paper return?
