    W-2/1000R Wishlist!

I wish that there was a box on the W-2 that the employer was required to show what the employee's W-4 showed.

    You know, M-0, M-9, S-8, whatever.

And the same with retirements on 1099R's.

It sure would save me time explaining to the clients why they owe taxes on the large W-2's/1099R's with large $ amounts and very little Withholding.

I can back into what I think the W-4 shows, but that takes time, and most won't believe me.

Especially when the wife gave herself a raise without getting a raise! Changed W-4 from M-0 to M-4! And hubby is already M-4. And they have only 2 kids.

And one of the kids turned 17 in 2011.

Because.... since people can change stati and number of allowances during the years, multiple times even, such information would not matter. ("stati" is latin plural.)

But I find it easy enough to backtrack with a last year's copy of pub 15 at hand. At least we have an average.

The other day client was amazed at owing 8,700$. After all, he had change withholding during the year pursuant to my recommendation last year. I compared boxes 2 and said yes, he had changed it; from 4500$ in 2010 to only about 1500 last year!
Plus of course no withholding on either his or wife's SSA, and no w/h on her retirement.

It's apparent to me from years of looking at spouses' w2 forms that there is a conspiracy among wives in this country to claim the max number of allowances in order to nullify federal withholding. They must have some sub rosa conspiratorial organization.

The bane of my existence. You explain it, they call you two days later: "My hairdresser say her accountant let her claim her kids til they were 19."
If you loan someone $20 and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

They should get a new hairdresser.

Part of the problem is that they try to fill out the top of the form. By the time they get to the bottom the section it has them claiming twice as many exemptions than they should.

Uh-huh . . . I've had plenty of red-faced husbands in front of me, when it is discovered that he did the monkeying with the W-4. In my experience, this problem afflicts both genders . . .

              I like your wish, Jiggers!

There is a popular software program used to produce W-2's which does. It is the one which has 3 vertical copies on the bottom half, and one copy and a big blue box on the top half which shows this info. Sure is helpful sometimes. Wish everybody used it. PS: One of my elderlies called yesterday to find out why he owed taxes, when his friends (whom I do as well) didn't. I guess the fact that he is single, and they are married escaped him.
