    Find Casino info using EFIN

Client dropped off her tax information today. While traveling this past summer, she won $1800 from slot playing in either NY or CT.

They gave her a printout showing their EFIN, but the name of the casino and address are not on the form. Taxpayer never thought to get the ino.

Does anyone know of a way I can get that info so we can efile the return, or will I just have to prepare a mail in?

    Thanks

Not sure that you need the form,,,include amount on 1040 line 21 and type Gambling winnings in the space.

            Google Search

You could try a Google search. Be sure to include the dash (-) after the second number.

                    Suggest waiting for more information

Having an EFIN (Electronic Filing Information Number) on a statement of gambling winnings makes no sense.

I believe part of the (initial) confusion is you should have been looking for an EIN (Employer Identification Number) which later was found by gboykin.

Don't you think there likely will be a forthcoming Form W-2G due to the amount/nature of the gambling winnings?

You might want to wait before you efile or whatever, especially if there are multi-state issues involved. The Form W-2G has much information that might be very relevant, especially if you efile.

"Haste makes waste" or something like that.

Wirh all the cross checking the IRS is doing the 1099 needs to be input through the link for Line 21. The name of the casino isn't important but I usually input "1099 from EFIN.

On-line EFIN searches have a fee. Try the IRS preparer hotline..they may be able to guide you to a resource. Also know that if the TP intends to deduct losses he/she will need a win/loss statement from the casino or a log of her winnings/losses.
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

I still don't know what an EFIN number has to do with anything here.

Also, from the facts given by the OP, I would not expect any Form 1099 issuance but rather a Form W-2G to be prepared.

I have not dealt with a Form W-2G in recent years, but I just checked my software and there is an entry field to include ALL of the relevant information shown on the Form W-2G. From there, a "worksheet attached" comment is generated on line 21, and said linked worksheet shows an entry for "Gambling Winnings Reported on Form W-2G."

I do not know what actually gets transmitted to the IRS when such a return is efiled, but my uneducated guess (in today's world) is likely some of the relevant information - OTHER than just the winning dollar amount - shown on the W-2G does make it to the IRS computers. It should be noted that said line 21 worksheet also has a separate line for "other gambling winnings NOT reported on a Form W-2G." This also leads me to think that the information on any Form(s) W-2G does reach the IRS, possibly even for verification not unlike what happens if you have a "wrong" EIN entered on a regular Form W2.

For that reason, I would be very careful of "forcing" an entry on line 21 especially when it is likely a W-2G has been/will be issued for this client.

                        Just my 2¢ worth....

I really don't think it is absolutely necessary to input any information from a W-2G other than to enter the amount or the total of all the amounts from on line 21 Gambling Winnings.

The reason that this is pointed out to you is we do not want to promulgate an incorrect idea by just repeating the OP's incorrect "EFIN" when it is clear that OP meant EIN. We are supposed to be more helpful than that in our sharing of knowledge. It matters to us posters when we are corrected on a wrong point. It is very helpful.
