    That was the W-2G

The form they received was the W-2G. A lot of casinos will give the gambler the W-2G right when they win so they don't have to mail a bunch out in January, and it saves them hassle if the person moves.

        Facts should trump opinion

Is this just your personal opinion or something actually based upon facts (such as from a tax software vendor or the appropriate ERO)?

Does your tax software even allow you to add such - without an override or two - onto line 21?? (Mine does not - I eventually have a blank Form W-2G staring me in the face!) You perhaps could take the same approach for a W2 - enter wages on line 7 and withholding on line 62 - also maybe not even enter the correct EIN. If so, I guarantee you that an electronically filed tax return will be initially rejected.

For those who may not have encountered one, here is the chance to see what is actually on a Form W-2G: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw2g_11.pdf

Personally I prefer to enter the data as shown from the official tax documents, to include the "extra" stuff on a Form W2 and even more importantly from a Form 1099-R. I pay good money for the tax software, so I prefer that GIGO ("garbage in - garbage out") is avoided at all costs in the returns that I prepare.

No, I do not (personally) know the answer to the W-2G question posed. Time is increasingly valuable in the next few weeks. These boards have many knowledgeable readers who can perhaps chime in if they actually know the applicable rule.

my humblest apology. I understand your point but I learned to read or listen to what they meant not necessarially what they say (write)
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.
