    married or NOT?

    taxpayer came in last week - assured us he and spouse were NOT divorced in 2010 - she came in today and said yes we were divorced on Dec 10th? What? you dont know if/when you were divorced? Really?

      Ask to see the divorce decree. Many people do not know the exact date they were divorced since it typically takes a few months after filing for divorce for it to actually become final. My sister-in-law didn't figure out she was officially divorced until six months after the fact.

          Oh, be careful not violate Section 7216. That is always difficult when you are dealing with divorced couples.
