I have always updated all my clients at once and have never had a problem, until this year. I had to rebuild about 33% of my client list one by one and then update them to even show them in client selection. I think that problem is behind me now. The final insult the other day was when I disappeared off the selection screen. Can you imagine?

Updating in TaxWorks
As far as I can tell, you must be in a user account that has Administrative privileges when you update the TaxWorks program. If not, the upgrade starts to install and then fails when it starts to make changes to your registry, leaving you in an unusable state. TRX sent out an e-mail several weeks ago about how to undo and redo failed upgrades, but it is not for the faint of heart.
I have my upgrade manager set to download and notify, not to download and install.
IIRC, TaxWise by CCH has a similar upgrading problem.

DTS or anyone else if you have the screen shots of the errors can you send them to me so I can pass them on to the President and others in TWorks. I lit a fire under them this morning!
Thanks

I sure would like to send the screen shots to you, but they contain full names and SS and I just can't do that. Please take no personal offense to this, but I can't. If they did not have all this personal info on the screen, I would send them along to you. I did send them to tech support and they should have them on file.
Keep us informed of what you find out. It's important we continue informing TW by doing what we are doing.

Oh yes
Updates 8.7 and 8.8 last two nites,
Just checked at there is another update 8.9 (Thursday 2/10/11
So phone calls and emails are working
I have been "bumped out" on both 2009 and 2010 - the TW. ??? Main and shut the program down.
I had an update on client from 2009 to 2010 - that was not resolved, and just spent an hour re-inputting 2009 to upgrade to 2010.
Just whether there is any resolve.
All TW users just keep phoning and submitting "screen shots" for errors to TW support and their Reps.

Someone in this thread, suggested that we upgrade our 2009 program. I did that last night. I had 6 returns today, and I did not get one error. I am a happy campter!! I also did an upgrade, and for the first time NO errors. Thanks for the support. I will be glad when Tax Works gets their forum up and running, so we can discuss these problems there.

Tax Works Forum
Unfortunately a Tax Works Forum is much needed, and they have been "lagging" initiating same.
So emails to support or talking to your Rep is the best that we can hope for
It is a good program - I have been with them since 2003
It has just been the last 2 years 2009 and 2010 that I have experienced what the new issues are - worse this year for 2010 returns.
Support has always been good and this was the first year that support could not address one of my issues on upgrading a client from 2009, I finally gave up and just rebuilt from 2008 to 2009 and re-enterd to update in to 2010. It was less time than have support figure it out. So finally client converted to 2010.
Program still will close unexpectedly - not sure if it is now fixed with 8.9 upgrade
Always something!
