Poll. Did IRS visit your office this past season?

One poster previously told us IRS scheduled a compliance inspection of their office during tax season, but I never heard the result. Also, somebody running a tax office out of a liquor store (good location for it -- break the bad news, then sell 'em a bottle of booze to soften the blow) said they were notified they'd be "visited," but I didn't see anything else on that one either.

I got an IRS letter in January titled Prepare Accurate Individual Income Tax Returns (I assume we all got it) which stated "IRS representatives will visit many of the preparers who receive this letter to discuss their obligations as a return preparer." I'm sort of thinking that that the effort to make us straighten up and fly right consisted of maybe 99% letters and 1% visits.

Anyway, I'm curious about the number of visits. Could we get a show of hands on this?

P.S. If they did come see you; would you kindly furnish details? Thanx.

Only know of one visit by IRS to an EA (over in OK, right next to you), of all the EA's who
frequent our NAEA Webboard. The letters were supposed to have been sent out indiscriminately, i.e. to all preparers notwithstanding qualifications or lack thereof; but he is
only EA I've heard who got the letter and a visit.
He said his visit went very well, and seemed to concentrate on form 2106, since he does a lot of traveling nurses returns.

Yes, came in Feb took an hour and was informative about FTHB forms; 2106; Sch A; Sch C and F. On the new rules the IRS did not want us to make mistakes on before the season started. The lady was very nice and said that was all she wanted to say about for us to watch for mistakes on the new rules. SHORT AND SWEET to me.

I see you posted, but did not vote in the poll. That leaves it looking as if no one got a visit. I suppose you will tell me "close enough for government work".
Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

No need to worry about the "forgetfulness" issue. I looked at the last 3 posts and spent at least a couple of minutes trying to figure out how Thomtax knew you hadn't voted. Just as I was about to click off (still puzzled at the time), I happened to look at the graph and lo & behold there was my answer...

              Thanx for the reminder folks.

I also forgot to vote and just now did.

Funny thing about these polls though -- 99 hits and only 23 votes. Makes you wonder if the missing 76 are

              1. not tax preparers.

              2. don't have an office.

              3. are only susbscribers to TTB.

              4. simply aren't interested.

It seems like poll numbers usually run this way, whatever the cause.

                  Irs Visit

IRS did a compliance audit on one of my preparers.I am the one that has an office in a liquor store. It was the audit from hell.He knew nothing about bank products wanted to see our receipts for payment. It took an hour to explain bank products. He had us pull 75 returns to see if a copy 8867 was signed by the taxpayer if they received EIC. We then had to pull 33 returns that were Schedule C or CEZ.he then fined the preparer $100.00 per return for not having any backup for the income and expenses claimed. If it was up to me I would fight it but the owner is going to pay the fine for the preparer. We have still not received the bill to pay
The auditor was there nine hours he constantly complained that we did not have an office for him or a phone he could use.We gave him a table and a chair in a store room.We don't have any offices. Also the list of returns he had us pull were not in alphabetical order which made it all the more time consuming.

The only back up I have for income and expenses claimed by my business (Sch C) clients is their word! If it is a drop-off return, I copy the papers they give me. I've accompanied 2 audits and all went smoothly, no changes. But keep backup of their income and expenses? For all of them? Dog, I don't have enough filing space for all that!

                    Now, SIGNATURES I have!!

                      Irs Audit

You only need back up if the client is receiving EIC. It is the due diligence for EIC is the problem.

After seeing thse posts, I'm not sure I'd eve be willing to prepare a Schedule C if the person is getting an EIC, unless it's thoroughly documented with bank statements, receipts, canceled checks, etc. Aside from the potential penalty per return, looks like it might put the preparer on the radar screen just on the basis of probability.

MLinder, are you sure it was Form 8867? I thought this was designed to be the preparers' copy of the questionnairer. They DO have to sign Form 8879, and I make sure I have their signature for that.

                          Am I doing things wrong?

I didn’t think we had to save copies of the client’s receipts of income and expenses when filling out
His Schedule C or F. My clients fills out their income and expenses on my organizer, I may look at some
Of their receipts, however I don’t think I’m required to make copies of them.

If client receives EIC you must have proof that you asked the questions on the 8867.If you have the client fill out any form with these same qustions and signed it is ok.We just find it easier to have them sign the 8867.For the Scheule C you don't have to save the receipts if you have an organizer that is fine we had no paper to prove client gave us the figures. We now have client fill out a form that lists occupation gross income expenses and net income.
