Got my first reject in connection with the schedule M. It turns out that he is receiving SS and also VA disability. She is employed full time. It said the amount for him on the schedule M is incorrect. He said he received $250. She received -0-. Would he be getting some stimulus from the VA also and thats why its rejecting? I might just have it mailed in. Any help out there?

No the rules clearly state you only get one pymt. I would suggest again that you have every client that might qualify contact their respective SSA or other and determine whether they got the money before you attempt to efile any client's returnBelieve nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

Schedule M
Take a look at the Schedule M in the return that got rejected.
Which line has the $250 payment that he received?
Line 10 or Line 11?
If the payment arose out of his social security or VA disability, then the payment should be reported on line 10. But if he has a VA pension, then maybe it belongs on line 11.
Your client may not know whether it's pension or disability.
I'm not kidding. He may be "retired on disability."
Also: does your software allow you to code whether the $250 was received by the taxpayer or the spouse? Could it be coded wrong?

I have always had very low rejection rates because I always double check or triple checks the tax returns. I think I have never had more than 10 rejects a year before. But this year my rejection rate will probably go through the roof because of this social security and Schedule M issue. I have had rejects because my client told me they have received the $250 payment but actually they have not. I have also had rejects because they told me they have not received it but actually they have got it already. (Yes I did give them the phone number and tell them to check with the Social Security Administration. I guess most of them are too lazy to do it and just tell me what they remember off their head). What can I do about it? Looks like nothing much.

Schedule M
I have had good luck with having them call their bank and confirming receipt of the $250, when they want to assert they did not receive it.
I did get the letter from SSA myself. Wife then made a point to check bank records which is what gave me the idea.
One that did give me problem/reject was VA disability. Did not have to report income in previous years, so thought he did not have to report this either. And I had no warning, such as age, or previous years income.

The $ 250
If your client has internet access to his bank account, he could check to see if he got it.
My wife didn't think she got it, but I checked her bank account for several months on the internet and found the $ 250 deposit.
Most people don't look too closely at their bank statements, and would never question a deposit that they don't remember making.
