Can someone please explain to me what an asphalt roof with appropriate cooling granules is? I am not familiar with this. I know a metel roof qualifies for the credit but am assuming a regular shingle roof does not? This is where I don't understand what the asphalt roof is. Thanks for any help.

a good link, but it's probably not going to do you much good -- practically no small independent roofers are going to have a clue if the roof is qualified. The link suggests you get a "manufacturer's certification" but how the heck that could be accomplished without lots of time and trouble is beyond me. I'm thinkin' that probably most regular asphalt roofs won't have that "reflective pigment" (or whatever), but who knows?

I suppose it's every preparer for him/herself on this one -- depending on how bold you are.

the rules on roofs are complicated. A FEW metal roofs quaify in certain areas.
Some shingles can qualify.

Yesterday I went to my energy credit webb site to find what the rules are regarding a roof.
My interpretation of it was that it is too complicated to explain and that the taxpayer should
obtain a Certification from the installer of the roof if it qualifies for the energy tax credit.
