IRS agt referred me to author of clients letter, what exactly does this mean?

Been waiting on IRS to reply on forms it requested back in early June 2009. Those forms were mailed late June. On Sept 8th the IRS agent wanted the number off my clients June letter to locate the author of the letter. The IRS agent then said "I emailed this author to call you" and the IRS agent calls this a "referral". I called the IRS again today and the author/referral is suppose to call me within 30 days from Sept 8th. What if this author/referral calls me and receives my voice message, will the author/referral leave a message with a direct phone number to call him or her back?

The June letter requested Form 1045 Sch A & Sch B which were mailed in late June. In case the forms are lost, will the IRS accept these forms faxed?

I'm not sure I understand your question. Do you have a Power of Attorney to represent this client, or not? If you do, simply call the agent and he/she will answer your question. I'm not sure what "number" you're referring to? An IRS form number, or what?

      Confused as well

Zee you are not alone, I was confused by the OP post as well.

I have read a few times, and hesitate to make a presumption and more than likely my presumption will be incorrect - maybe AZ can repost with a time of events and clearer explanation

        Me Too

Sorry A to Z, but trying to understand what is going on is very much like tuning in to an Agatha Christie mystery in the middle of plot and trying to catch on. Can you back up and paint a more complete picture?

          Clarification (hopefully)

I apologize for that. First my client received a letter from the IRS in early June (Not a notice or CP2000 letter) regarding my clients 2005 and 2006 amended tax return taking advantage of 2007 NOL carry back. The June IRS letter is requesting form 1045 Sch A and Sch B which was completed and mailed to the IRS in late June. I made many calls to the IRS throughout July, Aug and on Sept 8th, the IRS agent I talked to wanted a certain number from the top right of the June IRS letter which the IRS agent told me discloses the author of the letter. The IRS agent then informed me he is sending an email to the author of the June IRS letter to contact me via phone. When I called the IRS again on Sept 21, the IRS agent I talked to said an email was sent to the author of the June letter on Sept 8th and the author has 30 days to call me. I may not be using the correct terminology but hopefully this brings some clarity. Anyway, has anyone had experience with this and if the author of the June IRS letter calls and I miss the call, will this IRS agent leave his or her direct number for me to call them back? Also, if by any chance the IRS misplaced my clients form 1045 Sch A and Sch B, will the IRS allow them to be faxed in? Lastly, there are several sets of numbers on the top right of my clients June letter but I don’t know which number would be of importance to this conversation and of course I don’t want to give out any sensitive data on my client. Thanks

I asked previously if you provided or have on file a POA as the representative of your client. If not, the IRS agent isn't allowed to communicate with you about your client either by telephone or letter. So, they shouldn't even have talked to you about a client without a POA. But, it does happen. If you responded on your letterhead and don't have a POA, the IRS might not acknowledge receipt. If you had the client respond and send in the requested schedules, I'm not sure why you haven't received a response...perhaps it was lost in the shuffle. This is a disclosure policy the IRS tries to follow carefully.

The letter your client received should have contained the agent's name and contact telephone number and address. So, I assume the number of the "author" is the number of the "agent". Do you no longer have a copy of the letter received?

If you don't have a POA, you might have your client call the IRS. Honestly, I don't know whether the IRS routinely acknowledges the receipt of requested material or not. But, I'll try to find out for you and send you an email if you have one in your profile.

Yes I have POA on last 5 tax years

and I think Burke had a good idea for which along with the form 1045 Sch A and Sch B, I should have included copies of the amended returns for which I still may suggest to my client.

              thanks for all your help.

                Good.

As you probably already know from your previous experience, the IRS does not routinely confirm receipt. And, it's possible the case is still being closed.

But, if the documents weren't received, it's standard practice to issue a follow-up letter...3-months seems awful long, but I suppose it's possible a second letter still hasn't been issued. Requested documents are date-stamped when received, so it's my guess your mailing wasn't received or lost. I'm also surprised there was no contact name on the letter. Did you send the information with a request for a receipt? That might be a suggested practice in the future, that doesn't help now. Generally, if you're asked for a specific schedule....that's all that's needed. If you can't learn the status by phone. Why not send them in again with a receipt request, a copy of the IRS letter, a copy of your POA, and a letter indicating they were sent earlier and the date?

The IRS has many new agents in training. That means they're learning the process, and could explain the problem.

                  call

this might be a good time to call practitioner hot line and let someone there "track" your issue - I've found them to be quite helpful most times

Correct. And some of these agents are fresh out of college and haven't really looked at a tax return before -- let a lone prepare a few.

I was not aware of such a hot line. This is a 'hot line' to the IRS?

                      thanks for posting.
