    Stop the pressure

I agree Linda. Give us a chance to breathe. I, too, asked TRX to not bother me until summer has passed as I need to exhale to center myself.

I am going to download the TW program tomorrow. He says they don't have the ATX program ready, but it will show up on the web site when it's ready. TW is probably the most like TSP, so the learning curve should be less. They do offer a conversion program so it'll be interesting to see how well it converts. I'll use my tax return as the guinea.

I started downsizing cable, telephones and anything else I could save money on recently. You are so right, I should have cut a lot of this stuff a long time ago. I think when you have other income you don't pay as much attention. Once my main job downsized last year, I knew I had to economize. It hasn't been too hard. Look at what we can do with the extra money we won't be sending to TSP. I can learn to like another program for $400 less.

      conversions

TS Pro conversions to TW works well, very little kinks to bother with. Since both are menu driven programs they are alike in many ways.
However, there is a learning curve. You should do a number of 2008 returns manually before getting the c onversions which TRX will do for you.

        Thanks Chief

Thanks for letting me know that there is a learning curve. I will do as you suggest and do several of my more involved returns. I definitely want to see hiw depreciation works.

I didn't get a chance to d/l today because of all the noise of a roof installation. I will try tomorrow though.

TRX looks very enticing. I went to their web site (leaves a lot to be desired, if you didn't know what they were about, you would be left guessing) and tried to download their ATX program, all it looked like was their Tax Wise program, so I did not do it. I will not use Tax Wise. Maybe Monday I can get more information. One question is, when do they deliver? I am used to getting a program up and running in December (spoiled I guess). I got an 07 ATX program last winter to help a friend to learn how to efile thru ATX. It had been years since I had looked at their program, it has improved quite a bit. Not sure I want to figure out a new program but saving money is very very tempting, especially since I have semi-retired and working out of my home now. One other question with TRX do we have access to the ATX community (forum). I love forums and would be lost without one about the program I am using.

            TRX Beta

Someone mentioned correctly that anyone who wants it can obtain a beta version of a new tax software they are working on. This may be obvious to those of you who know more than I do about what's involved in coming out with new commercial tax software but they're not planning to have a salable product out until it is late in 2010 and we are getting ready to do the returns for that year in Jan to April of 2011. Thus while you can play with it and they would like to hear what you think you literally can't efile with it any time soon and they don't recommend using it even to produce paper copies of real returns.

In short you can get the Beta and play with it but 2011 will be the first tax season for which it might be for sale. When I heard they were beta testing now I assumed that there would for one hundred percent sure be a version for sale for doing 2009 returns.

I am personally going to get the Beta and play with it for a couple hours every week, doing at least one complete return a month and give them feedback just because I will enjoy doing so and I'm not all that busy in the off season.

              Mail ATX

I called TRX last week, I think Tuesday. I took the plunge. I can download TaxWise from the website. They mailed me a copy ATX. I got it in the mail Saturday. I went ahead and signed up with them because if I signed up before the end of April, I can try TaxWise and ATX and choose during the summer which program I like best. Just so I let them know before they are ready to send out the final program before next tax season starts.

I questioned him about what happens if I don't like the program. He assured me that I would love one of the programs and would be completely satisfied.

So now I can load it in my computer and see how I like it.

Not sure if you call this week, if you could still talk them into a deal. But if you know you don't want TaxWise, they have to mail you the ATX software to try.

                Forum

The official ATX forum does NOT have a lot of activity. However, there is an UNofficial ATX forum at ATXCommunity.com which is open to everyone. It's active and full of extremely knowledgeable tax preparers. Visit it now to check it out. It's where we all fled when CCH pulled the plug on their forum right before the end of tax season a couple of years ago (it was reinstated by CCH this past season but is the one with little activity). One of our members set up the forum and handles the technical stuff. We also have another very active webmaster. And, there are ongoing discussions about the two ATX packages that TRX is reselling. That and this are the two boards I read all day long, with a few others less often. Come on over.

                  TRX Forum

TRX has created a forum. I stumbled onto it by mistake through their support site. Not many discussions yet, as apparently others have not learned of it. But I am sure it will catch on and will be quite helpful, especially now that they are offering both TaxWise and ATX. BTW, I used TRX for the first time this year and was pleased. I had to get used to using Taxwise, but will be switching back to ATX next year.

                    TRX Forum

Forgot to mention, there's a full TRX forum as one of the forum choices at the ATX Community Forums. On the opening page, it's partway down the page.

                        The TW program I d/l is 2007

                        Chief,

The TaxWise program I downloaded is for 2007 and totally turned me around. Thought I was getting 2008. It is very different in some ways than TSP but I attribute that to having to first set everything up and getting familiar with the screens. I do think I want to wait until the 2008 program is available. I also want to test ATX. Either way, I have not renewed TSP yet.

                          Call them

I called them and they mailed me a copy of the 2008 program both for TaxWise and ATX. Of course, I did agree to buy one of the programs, but I don't have to make up my mind right now. I can try them both out and choose the one I want.

TSP called me today to tell me that the deadline had been extended till the end ot this week. But unless I really totally dislike both these programs, I guess I will be an ATX or TaxWise person for the next filing season.

I just installed the ATX program and will try it out now.

There's a pretty serious discussion taking place over on the Unofficial ATX Community about some sort of mixup between TRX and CCH over whether TRX is actually a reseller of the ATX program. Somebody at each company seems to be playing a high-stakes game of chicken - be careful you don't run off the cliff with them.

The software is Taxwise from CCH.
