    Braces

I was kind of surprised to see that "braces" are an allowed itemized deduction, according to pub. 502. Is that not the same as cosmetic surgery? One could argue that you don't "need" braces?

    Braces

Braces do far more than cosmetic changes. Misaligned teeth can cause all kinds of problems to the jaw and soft tissue areas of the mouth and sinuses. Braces are often the thing that pushes a client's medical expenses above the 7.5% floor since insurance usually pays very little towards the cost.

Seems like most children now also are receiving orthodontia work, so really not a surprise that it would be included in medical deductions.

Whitening or Bleaching, well maybe that is cosmetic.
