I was kind of surprised to see that "braces" are an allowed itemized deduction, according to pub. 502. Is that not the same as cosmetic surgery? One could argue that you don't "need" braces?

Braces do far more than cosmetic changes. Misaligned teeth can cause all kinds of problems to the jaw and soft tissue areas of the mouth and sinuses.
