    MFS efliled return - Proseries

I have never efiled a MFS return and I cannot get through to Proseries support. I am in a community property state and must split the income.

Does anyone know if I will create problems if I enter information on "dummy" W-2's to get the income to the correct amount?

For example Husbands W-2 has $25,000 but he will be allocating $10,00 to Wife. Wife has allocated $11,000 to husband.

I can enter the wife's information on the community property efile worksheet, but the husbands flows through from the W-2 worksheet. So, can I enter $15,000 on the W-2 worksheet ($25,000 actual less $10,000 allocated to wife) to force the correct amount to the community property efile worksheet?

Or is there another way to process this? If all else fails I can do a paper return, but I thought he might receive his refund quicker to efile.

Jesse - I don't live in a community property state, and I know you are busy so if you don't have time to answer, I will understand.

For my own curiousity, I thought community property states had to split 50-50. I am curious as to how the $25,000 could be split 15k-10k.

Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

Yes you're correct, I had a Black Bart moment (just kidding Bart). I never put the actual numbers in my questions as I don't want a client to come across and find I'm inquiring as to their situation - probably would never happen - but just in case. I'm also working on a divorce situation which in WI you split the income only to the date of divorce so it's not 50/50 unless the date of divorce is 12/31/xx - but that cannot be efiled. I have not yet tried to efile a MFS - community property state.

So, anyhow, the questions remains the same because my clients W-2 income will not match his W-2 even if it's a 50/50 split as his W-2 would have $25,000, but I only want to report $12,500. I don't know if there would be any repercussion to the non-match?

Thanks. Just last year Proseries came out with the MFS Community Property E-File Worksheet, before that Wisconsin could not efile MFS to IRS. Thought I might test the waters this year but I think I'll do the paper.

            E-File

In Arizona, we cannot e-file a MFS return.

We can't efile MFS in Texas either.

Gary, I efiled MFS to IRS 4 AZ resident..

Unless I misunderstood your post, I looked and I efiled one of my MFS clients to the IRS for tax year 2007. It looks like I paper filed AZ. Unless it got rejected from IRS and then I ended up mailing it. I will need to check their paper file. I use ProSeries. What part of AZ you located? I am in the extreme SE valley.

Do you recall how you managed to get your numbers to work out? Did you enter the amount you wanted to report on the W-2 worksheets vs. the amount that was actually reported on the W-2's (or 1099R, 1099B or whatever document you were reporting?

With matching I know the name and FEIN #'s must match or will reject and I think with the MFS Community Property E-File Worksheet it should be okay as this would explain why the numbers do not match reporting documents.

I am going to paper file my return, but it would be nice to know for the future. I don't recall having to contact tech support in previous years, but it sure isn't easy this year, I don't have the patience!

I've been able to efile MFS CA returns for a couple of years. ATX has a worksheet to show the split for efiling purposes that has to be filled out to file. It does not affect the numbers on the return, but shows how much of line 7 etc was for husband and how much was for wife. I don't know if the info transmits to the IRS to match with the W-2s, and since all of my MFS was post separation (in CA the community ceases upon separation) it was 100% TP & 0% spouse) One way to avoid the CP2000 problem with mismatched wages is to enter the wages per W-2s and then do an adjustment labled "allocated income per community property" on line 21.

Thank you, I like the line 21 deduct, I did not think of that, but it does seem like a good idea.
