QB Pro 2008, cannot restore file

I have a client who gave me her .QBB file on a thumbdrive and when I try to restore it on my QB Pro 2008, its telling me to save to a folder of my desire then when I do, it gives me the message that restored failed. I even tried it on my friend PC who has QB Pro 2008 and it gives me the same message.

What year is the original software? I restore copies all the time and have never had a problem. Be sure to save onto your hard drive and not the thumb drive. That shouldn't cause a problem but I guess it could.

      Restore

Is it a QB Backup Copy or a Portable Company File? There are different procedures for restoring.

        Updates?

I am restoring from a .QBB file that was sent to via email. I then copied to a thumbdriver. If my client updated their QB Pro 2008 since installing and I never did, does that make a difference? I called a local QB Pro advisor and they could no help me.

          Update

Are you using the QB backup/restore feature within QB? You can not copy the file to your thumbdriver from the email. You should click on the QB icon attachment in the email and it will then ask if you want to open or save. You will save to whatever location.
Then you open QB and go to File - Backup/Restore.

If your version is not updated to the clients version it will give you a message.
Try updating your version, then try restore again!

          What message are you receiving?

          Sandy

You can restore a file created on an older version to a newer version but not the other way around.

              QB people told me this...

QB Pro 08 users can create an "Accountant Transfer File" but you need to have 08 Accountant Premier" to open this .QBX file. Then the guy told me my QB Pro 08 .QBB file is bad and that I should either have my client send me another .QBB file or physically go over to my client and obtain a back up copy from their computer. The guy based on the fact that I got a message of "restored failed" when I tried to restore the .QBB file. You thoughts?

Sounds to me like the backup file might have been bad, so you were unable to restore it. Depending on how large the file was, sending a large file by email could result in it being damaged. I would go to the client's location and put a backup onto a flash drive. That should solve the problem.

                  What version do you have?

If you have QB Pro or Accountant's Version you should be able to have the client do a "portable file (QBM)" Back Up which is a condensed file and usually will send through email as an attachment.

                  Here is a link http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com...e_restore.html

It does sound like the backup was corrupt. Make sure the client uses the QB file backup or portable file.

I now have had all of my QB clients sign up for LogMeIn Pro and I access and transfer file backups which is faster and easier than email. QB files become very large, very fast.

How is this a tax question? Shouldn't you be using the QB forum or help? taxea

I like to learn about QB here

I like to learn about QB here. My clients bring me their files, send a CD, e-mail a file, etc., and I muddle through as best I can just learning on my own. I benefit from the questions and answers and knowing who else must use QB because they have clients that use QB. After all, on this board we're learning about QB from OUR perspective, the view of the tax preparers who must extract the P&L and Balance Sheet and payroll information and discover newly purchased capital assets and...out of files created by our clients. It's a lot like learning what to do with that box of receipts and check stubs a client dropped off.

                        Lion,
I couldn't agree more! I want the QB questions here! Why would that bother anyone? I doubt there are many on this board trying to extract "tax" info from a QB file who have not run into this very problem. If we can all aid in fixing the problem, the "tax" questions will follow.

                        Taxea,
AZ-Tax asks many "tax" questions and answers many, as well. Why the snide comment about the "tax" question? It may not be a "tax" question to you, but to many of us, this question goes hand-in-hand.

Try to think beyond your immediate needs.

I am thinking about immediate needs. In this case the need is how do I make my QB program accept and open the clients file. I think going to the source is much more efficient than asking a program question on a tax site.
This question is the same as not being able to open a client pdf file in adobe. Shouldn't it be asked to adobe? It has nothing to do with the clients tax information it is how do I get the information to read on my computer. taxea

                            Taxea,
I understand and agree with you on this point. However, there are many members on this board who can type in a quick fix to any number of questions, on any number of areas that save us time. They understand what we are trying to do. Sandy is a prime example of what I refer to. She is a QB expert, as are others here. When I read the original post, my hope was she would see the post and jump in and give AZ-Tax their answer, which she did.

I have been on the QB site and have found what I needed without bothering the board, but I know I can come here to ask or read a question that will help me, get the answers and, possibly, others will be helped in the meantime. I would not have that on adobe or QB support.

I thought this had a tacky, disrespectful and demeaning tone to it and was not called for. I can see from your last reply, this was not your intention, but it came across that way.

I wanted you to know that many of us love this board, the variety of questions that come into it and the way everyone helps out, including yourself, no matter the subject, how boring or stupid the question may sound, of which I've put out way too many! Unlike an unfamiliar site I may visit, I never leave here without my answer or like I feel 2" tall.
