Once more: Why AMEND?
How do you know this to be a fact?
It was my impression that the Soc Sec income information was included on the appropriate line of the original paper-filed return. Assuming that statement is, in fact, correct, one would think a follow-up letter or telephone call referring to the error should resolve the problem. Could the data entry person at the IRS simply not have failed to enter the Soc Sec number(s)?
Perhaps I'm very old school, but I always thought the purpose of an amended return was to CHANGE, i.e. amend, information from what was originally shown on a properly filed tax return, hence my original comment. What exactly was "changed" in this instance??
OTOH, if the original paper tax return did not show the gross/taxable amounts of the Soc Sec benefits received, then I could clearly see a reason to prepare a Form 1040X.
