    Excellent source of CPE credit

    Hello fellow tax pros,

Deloitte has a progam called DBriefs. I've found it to be the best deal out there -- a gift.

Take the lead with Dbriefs—live webcasts that give you valuable insights on important developments affecting your business.

It's free, group based CPE which you access online from your computer. They offer about 4 to 6 seminars per week. Each seminar is only one hour long.

I find them to be very very convenient and easy to use. Participants are required to answer three poll questions per hour to prove attendance. They are non graded opinion questions -- impossible to get wrong. When the questions pop up they override any other window which is open on your PC. So even if something distracts you these questions are hard to miss!

Anyone on a budget, like myself, should start racking up these free credits ASAP. Sign up just once and that's it, boom, you're good to go.

This board has been an excellent source of information for me. I'm happy that i now have something worth adding. (I don't work for Deloitte.)

And I'm sorry for the double post, but i wanted to devote a new thread to Dbriefs.

Another outfit that offers free CPE. They have a seminar tomorrow, 8/13/08, at 12 Eastern Time.

      Free CPE for me!

      bump

      Hi everyone,

While i am writing this i am attending one of the Deloitte Dbriefs internet webcasts. Today I'll get two free credits from Deloitte and maybe 1.5 credits from Ernst & Young. I am doing this from the comfort of my own home. Later on I might crack open an ice cold beer while i'm earning these credits.

Both sites are good. But Deloitte is ridiculously good on a consistent basis. The only downside to these sites is that it can take several weeks for them to email your CPE certificates to you.

        Excellent source of CPE credit

Web-seminars...do you have to be on line at a given time for the seminar? Hard to do from Hawaii...but thanks for the info. I'll check it out. taxea
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

          TaxEA,
I'm afraid that you do have to be logged in at a certain time to receive this freebie credits. So unfortunately this opportunity might not be so convenient for residents of Hawaii.

I contacted US Dbriefs, and they are solely a registered sponsor for providing CPE credit for US CPA's. CPE's would not qualify for NAEA or IRS Enrolled Agent hours.

              What line of business

is Deloitt and Teuche (hope that is close to the spellings) in and why is it in their best interests to offer high quality free CPE to any group? I feel strongly that most CPE costs more than I am willing to pay but at the same time I am suspicious of absolutely free CPE unless it comes from a company that has sold me a product for use in my practice or openly wants to do so. I thought the company in question was a national CPA Firm and I can't see what they gain from spreading their tax knowledge outside their firm.

                Erchress,

It seems to be a promotion. They're promoting themselves as an authority in the given subject. Price Waterhouse Coopers & Ernst & Young offer the same thing for free.

I would guess that it's quality but i can't be certain. I am only certain fact that they email CPE certificates to me at no charge.

I don't think there's anything to be suspicious about.

Not necessarily true. If the subject matter meets the guidelines, it would qualify. From the IRS site:

                    4. Q. How do I know if my courses qualify as acceptable CPE?

                    A. IRS does not pre approve/approve courses. The individual enrolled agent must take the responsibility of determining what is acceptable. You must be sure that the course(s) meets the guidelines set forth in the Treasury Department Circular No. 230. Section 10.6(f) Qualifying continuing education—(1) General. To qualify for continuing education credit, a course of learning must-

                    (i) Be a qualifying program designed to enhance professional knowledge in Federal taxation or Federal tax related matters, i.e., comprised of current subject matter in Federal taxation or Federal tax related matters, including accounting, tax preparation software and taxation or ethics; and

(ii) Be conducted by a qualifying sponsor.

                    5. Q. How do I know if a sponsor is qualified?

                    A. To qualify as a continuing education sponsor, the organization must meet one of the following four criteria:

                    (i) Be an accredited educational institution;

(ii) Be recognized for continuing education purposes by the licensing body of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, including a Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia

(iii) Be recognized by the Office of Professional Responsibility as a professional organization or society whose programs include offering continuing professional education or

(iv) File a sponsor agreement with the Office of Professional Responsibility and obtain approval of the program as a qualified continuing education program.

Many qualifying sponsors who meet the first three criteria will also file a sponsor agreement with the Office of Professional Responsibility in order to assure their customers that they are a qualified sponsor. You may ask the CPE sponsor if they have an approved sponsor agreement with the IRS and to provide you with a copy.

                      Dave

While I can agree with your post, the post I made about US Dbriefs, was a reply directly from them stating that
Deloitte is solely a registered sponsor for providing Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit for US CPAs. You may also want to contact the state directly and inquire as to what is acceptable and/or examine the CPE Market at www.CPEMARKET.com. CPE Market is a NASBA resource and provides professionals with a database of courses to obtain continuing professional education credits for the purpose of renewing and maintaining their CPA licenses. It also features current information on state-mandated continuing education requirements. Please let me know if you have additional questions.
I specifically requested whether or not their CPE's would qualify for NAEA or IRS enrolled agent continuing education credits, and the above is what they emailed me. So it would seem that they have not filed a sponsor agreement with the Office of Professional Responsibility in order to assure their customers that they are a qualified sponsor

Thanks for the outline though as it might come in handy for future reference of determining EA CPE providers.

Warning: Just recently Deloitte has been sending a few of my certificates 'late.' And by late i mean it's taken them longer than their own stated turnaround time of 15 days. Also it seems that i might be missing a few.

So i'm now keeping a little record of what webcasts which i participated in -- name, date and time.

Deloitte has responded to my inquiries about this and thus far are being cooperative.

But up until just recently Deoitte has been real good about giving these freebie to me.

good luck to all of you

                              Bump.

I have yet to find a better deal out there. These credits are are gifts. I'd argue that even those who've already bought 'all in one' CPE packages elsewhere could benefit from these freebies.

I hope that some of you might benefit from this. As this forum has already been a great benefit to me.
