 Name must be on account

In prior years, the taxpayer had to have an account in their name or at least their name had to be on the account.

Actually, the system looks for the SS number, I think.

Just go down to the bank and open a savings account. Not a big deal. Then the refund can go into his account.

Off the record most banks do not verify, but if the girlfriend takes the money they don't have much recourse. Generally a bad idea.Comment

Another preparer in my office came up with this exact situation yesterday. New client, a prior preparer managed to get a direct deposit to a cousin's account instead of the taxpayer. Evidently the cousin took the money and the taxpayer got nothing. Now the client's going after the preparer.Originally posted by UnregisteredOff the record most banks do not verify, but if the girlfriend takes the money they don't have much recourse.
