    Must there be an address on a W-2?

    Good day,

    ding, ding, we have another winner.

    Now I am in the process of reconstructing W-2s for TY 2006 for a client -- it seems the company never got around to submitting them to the IRS/SSA [do not ask, you do not want to go there].

    Their record-keeping system seems to be:
    (a) throw every single piece of paper in the universe into one big basket;
    (b) pull pin and throw hand grenade into basket;
    (c) come back when convenient and pick over what's left.

    Because of their record-keeping system, it is horrible to try and reconstruct the W-2s. But, my question is -- when submitting data to IRS/SSA is an address required on a W2? I cannot think what purpose it would serve. If no address is required, it would speed things up tremendously for me.

    Where do these people come from?
    Just because I look dumb does not mean I am not.

    I have had clients come in to do a trax return and their W-2 didn't have an address on them. Not that it means much to your question. But like you, I don't see any use that SSA has for an address.

    IRS on the other hand use to require when inputing W-2 info into a tax program, required that if the return address and the W-2 address are different we were to enter the W-2 address on the W-2 screen.

    What does all this mean???,,, I would file with the info available and let the chips fall where they may.

      Certainly seems to be plenty out there! Realistically I would consider valid social security numbers to be more important than addresses so if it were me I would file without complete addresses. But that does not make it correct.

        Thanks, all

        now that you mention it I have seen a TON of W2's with no address.

        Virtually every active duty member's W2 that I have seen has some "unit designator code" as the address -- no complaints from the IRS.

        You know, I was sitting around complaining last year that all the returns I did were "Mom, Pop and 2 kids".

        Gonna have to remember to keep my lip buttoned.

          By the way, the only problem I see is getting the W-2s to the employees.

            for a "normal" ["normal" = person who is a normal person].

            Believe it or not, they sent the W2s to the employees, they merely (!) forgot to send Copy A to SSA/IRS.

            I am rapidly learning that these clients are not "normals".

            I do not really want to go into it too much, but they also do not put the phrases "payroll records" and "seven years" in the same sentence.
