    Correct Auto Tax Deduction

I apologize if this is an old, old question:

Client paid his auto registration renewal, and his notice from the motor vehicles department says that the fees broke down as follows:

    registration fee: $41
license fee: $13 "may be an income tax deduction"
    weight fee: $24
    special plate fee: $0
    county/district fees: $10
    owner responsibility fee: $0

Total money required to be paid: $88

This truck (a 10-year-old pickup truck) is not used in business. How much of all this is an allowable deduction on Schedule A?

Only the vehicle license fee (VLF) is deductible on Sch A.

      Calif

If you are in Calif and you have the License plate and the last 5 digits of the VIN you can go online and obtain the amount that is tax deductible. https://mv.dmv.ca.gov/FeeCalculatorWeb/vlfForm.do

This is not true of all states, but sometimes you can go to other state websites and they will provide you with the breakdown of deductible amounts on Vehicle License Fees. Some other states, only have a base registration fee and the rest is actually a property tax.

Which of those are based on the value of the vehicle? If the answer is none then the answer is none.

The weight fee clearly would be based on weight not value so is not deductible. The others may or may not be deductible depending on whether they're based on value of vehicle.
