End of quest for injured spouse relief on stimulus rebate

Finally got through 35 minutes hold 'n' wait on the stimulus line (800-829-0582, Ext. 725), but to no avail. IRS rep says the stim is "a family thing" and they're splitting it right down the middle, 50-50. The 8379 has no effect.

Client's spouse owed child support but filed injured spouse and beat the rap on regular return; received large, full refund and nothing confiscated (income was all injured spouse's). But then IRS grabbed exactly 1/2 the stimulus -- he'd been expecting to get all that too. So anyway, that's what IRS is doing.

Actually those things (the child support debts) seem a bit tacky to me anyway. While the customers don't seem to be much embarrassed at all, I'm thinking "Why don't you support your kid?"

Bart: I'm totally with you on this one. I know there are occasionally some exceptional situations, but anyone who refuses to support their kids doesn't garner any sympathy from me.
