I wonder how many, if any of you are using Vista? If so have you had any problems? The reason I ask is XP is only going to be available for a few more weeks. I'm considering buying a new tower with XP while it's still available. The computer I'm using now is only 2 years old but it's stable and I have had no problems. I fear that the Vista system could cause trouble next season.. Any thoughts?

ask your software company
I would talk to your software company first.
I've heard horror stories regarding Vista. All on personal computers though. People have stated that some of their old programs would not run on Vista. But then I remember when the same thing happened when XP came out.
I also heard from a couple people who are brand new to computer world and because they don't know any better, they love Vista.
Find out if your previous year tax programs will run on Vista.
Personally ..... I'm fighting it and trying to stick to XP as long as I can. On a personal level .. my dad wanted a new computer a few months ago and I ordered him the XP because I was afraid of Vista. My Mom's computer is XP and I wanted my Dad's to match. I was afraid they would not be compatible on their network."And So It Begins!!!"

If you are really worried, just buy a copy of the software and keep it handy.
I bought a new desktop a few months ago, formated the hard drive and installed XP. It took a while and if you aren't computer savvy (I'm not THAT computer savvy) I would ask for some help but in reality, it wasn't that horribly difficult. Plus I've now got a computer with none of the junk software installed. I'll need to do this with my next laptop because we are required to have XP for some security software we log into.
I don't believe Vista is as horrible as people talk about but I honestly don't have a lot of experience with it. Ask your software providers if they are compatible with Vista - they should be more help than any of us.

They Know It
Microsoft already knows the resistance from the marketplace. They know that if they pull XP from availability and try to cram Vista down everyone's throat, PC sales will fall flat on their face. The result will be the same as the infamous "new Coke" where Coke had to restore the old formula or risk going out of business. [whether or not this was a deliberate marketing strategy does not change the truth of the foregoing statement]
Gone are the days when everyone would rush to the store to buy the latest and greatest operating system. Many of us are happy to have something that works and don't want to go through several days' misery switching over. We don't want to have to reload software that worked on XP/2000/Win98/whatever, and then be betrayed by a new system which won't run this stuff.

Win XP and SP3 issues

One item of interest: The very new SP3 (service pack #3) for Win XP arrived on the scene in early May, and is apparently creating problems for some software, especially antivirus/firewall stuff. The vendors are trying to catch up with "repairs" but IF you have Win XP and IF you install SP3, you might have some computer surprises in store!

Windows XP will be supported for awhile longer. I just rebuilt my computer and installed it again instead of buying Vista. How long as Vista been out? One year? It ususally takes 3 years for all the bugs to get worked out. It took me about that long to switch from 98 to XP. I think it is the end of 2008 that Microsoft will stop selling it.

Vista
My computer crashed and had had previous problems so I replaced it with a Dell Vista computer.
The only problem I had was that I had a wireless adapter that was not Vista compatible.
The store sold me a new one they claimed WAS Vista-compatible, but it wasn't. However, I was able to go to the web site for the adapter company and download some Vista drivers--now it works.
Some older printers may not have compatible drivers. If you are working with a network, Vista may have problems.
I have had no problems with Vista other than the wireless adapter problem which has now been solved.
It has taken some time and trouble learning how Vista works. Some things are improvements, but it took a while to learn how they work.
