    The original post forgotten

You are entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine. I never said I would go around recommending such actions, I said I thought it was an interesting theory. However ... if someone told me that is what they were doing I would not sit there and tell them that they cannot do that. I'm not telling Grandma that she has to charge for babysitting and I sure am not going to tell parents that they can't give Grandma gifts.
I would however tell them (in Pennsylvania) that they need to be aware that for some of the services available to the elderly that they have to include the $$ of gifts and that might cause them to lose those services.

In the middle of all this, the original post has been forgotten.

Possi asked for opinions on whether the grandparents had to file a Schedule C or if they could claim it as other income.

I don't even remember if anyone actually answered the question without reading the entire posts again .....

and as Sandy just said ... plain and simple ... if the parents want to claim the deduction then the grandparents will be claiming the income. Tax prep 101

And I don't think that *other income* qualifies the Form 2441 deduction. where Sch C income would qualify the use of the child care credit. (This is just a guess)

      Household Employee

Sounds like a household employee to me. If care is in the grandparents' household, then Schedule C. If occasional when child is sick and can't attend regular day care, then maybe Line 21. It's not a gift if it's given in exchange for services rendered, it's compensation.

        I Am A Grandmother!

Well folks, on May 8th I became a grandmother for the first time! YAY!

The delivery was most difficult and we almost lost the mom, my daughter in law. Praise God and Praise blood donors everywhere, she is alive and healing. My granddaughter is very healthy and well. My son and his wife are exhausted, so I'm there more than here. They don't have internet, so I can't be online....

I have been traveling between Va Beach and Chesapeake, and have not been in my office to see all the excitement this thread has stirred up!

My clients who want to claim the tax credit are just absolutely anal about saving on taxes. I will be sure to educate all parties involved before any money changes hands.

Hopefully I will be able to babysit MY new little one, and you can bet that instead of them paying me, I would gladly pay THEM! Call it "Hobby EXPENSE!" HAHAHA

Thanks for the reading, and the chatter and the knowledge it brings.

        Blessings,
        ~grandma possi

              Similar non-Tax arrangement

I have a barter arrangement with my daughter that is non-taxable because it has been grandfathered in ....

I give her tax advice and she gives me grandchildren!

I have not checked code to see if Grandmothered in is covered But, I would assume so!

Now, if we could just deduct the Grandmother expenses ... she cannot pass a sale rack of infant and kids clothing ... or anything.
