    Dependent claimed already....

This one gets stranger every minute. The deceased dependent has been claimed on another tax return and while I was waiting for the efile to process I said to myself, darn, I probably could have had the deceased file their own tax return and claim themselves. So I checked to see what it would do to the tax return minus this deceased dependent. Actually no change to the tax return. Then the efile process ended up getting rejected.

The taxpayer who claimed the deceased dependent in previous years can prove with documents this taxpayer financially supported and housed this deceased dependent over 1/2 yr in 2007.

    Wooow, now what?

    Deceased Dependent

So... you actually transmitted the decedent return as a dependent, or as a nondependent claiming their own personal exemption?

If the deceased person satisfies all the criteria for a qualifying relative, then they are in fact someone else's dependent, and should not attempt to claim their own exemption...

      Efiled was rejected...

I tried to transmit the tax return for which the deceased was a dependent. It got rejected on the error some other taxpayer claimed the deceased dependent which is a story in itself.

So, it sounds like my client should go ahead and mail in their tax return with the deceased dependent as their dependent and with proof they supported this deceased dependent.

But, the $300 rebate sounds very tempting.
