    Help needed with CA return

Hi Dennis or Sandy or anyone in California,

I have a student who is in CA on exchange program from his Florida school and he worked a little bit in CA at the university he is attending this semester. He earned $1238 in CA.
He also had some earnings from Florida and taxable scholarship.
He ends up owing CA $4 because of his AGI.

Can I deduct the scholarship from the CA AGI? I don't know what the subtractions are for CA income.

    Thanks for your help.

    Linda...

I don't know the answer to that. Maybe, Sandy or another will jump in for you.

I was about to say no, but then read his home state was florida, so I would guess if it was florida sourced. If he got it while in CA, taxable. But are you really that concered over $4?

        Yes

Because I am preparing the return in Florida and he is still in California. I will have to fax to him electronic filing forms and vouchers to pay, etc. Just more work. If I can eliminate the balance due, it would be easier.

Yes it is scholarship to Florida university so has nothing to do with CA.
