    Tuition

If a student received a 1098T from his school with $4000 in box 2 and $6000 in box 5, how do you determine if the difference is taxable to him?

If he gets more money than his tuition is, then he must be able to use it for housing and other school related expenses.

Linda, First I would ask for the actual print from the college to see if the amounts are correct. If they are, then expenses for books and school supplies will reduce the taxable amount but not housing.
