Paying Balance due by Credit Card

    Can it be done easily?

It appears that it can't be done directly w/ the IRS in a manner comparable to direct deposit. I did find a list of providers of that service on the IRS site.

Must the entire tax return be filed thru one of those providers or can the taxpayer simply take his 1040-V, call up the site on the internet and process it that way??

    I tried this

with only 1 client a couple years ago. The credit card company was going to charge some fee which was large and the client came back and we did a direct withdrawal on 4/15 instead.

The IRS pioneered the use of credit cards for government paymets. But they do not provide the service, take responsabiltiy for the security of the site, and do not pay the merchant fee like a store does.

Here is the link to the IRS page on the payments:

Features and Benefits of Paying via Credit or Debit Card:

This payment option is available to eFiled and paper returns and can be used for individual, business and other return. Many states, if not all states, use these service providers. And some municipalities also use the payment services.
