    Amend for telephone tax credit?

Didn't do any research - don't want to waste anyone else's time either - so off the top of your head do you know if a person was entitled to the telephone excise tax credit and did not do so on the 2006 return can you amend to receive it?

Or is there any other way to still receive the credit?

    yes

Yes you can. As a matter of fact a line was added to the 1040X for just that purpose

I guess that my mind jumps to the practical side too much. Would getting $30 or $40 even pay for the cost for the client to file a 1040X? With the exception of gaining income for the preparer (which I always need) it just doesn't seem practical to do unless there are some other factors involved.

Only in government or politics is a "cut in spending" really an increase. It's just not as much of an increase as they wanted it to be, therefore a "cut".

When I take on new clients I like to put the return on my system for 2006 and transfer the file to 2007 to help catch carryovers and items that might have been missed or calculated incorrectly.

I found the credit was missed by a couple of new clients so I thought I would just print out the 1040X and let the client mail it in and I will not charge for it, just goodwill I guess.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I guess that I was thinking of the senior citizen that called me. They are not a client and don't have to file a return so they never will be. Plus, they are not a friend that I would do free probably, and wanted to file a return for last year to get the telephone credit.

                telephone credit

Granted, most people in the US of A did qualify for the excise tax rebate, but not all.
Just because a person was filing a return, didn't mean they had had a phone in their name,
                for example.

I'd say about 80-85% of my clients did qualify.
