    1099-r

    Client brings in 1099R with box 2a written in by him. Any suggestions?

    I don't know and I doubt that you know whether the entry he made is correct or not. But you have to have a correct form prepared by the company and he or you and he have to persuade them to provide one. If you can't there is undoubtedly a way for you to prepare a substitute statement and use that but the result will be that the IRS will paw up the earth with you and your client, the preparer of the form and if different the firm on behalf of which it was prepared. You obviously don't want this and neither does anyone else involved. If you can speak to someone with authority I am sure you can get a proper form and assurance that it is proper.. At this late date you will most likely end up filing your client for an extension.

      Client's been doing this for years with their previous preparer, but I don't feel comfortable preparing a return without a proper form.
