I found an interesting report on IRS.GOV under TaxPro News of a report of the top 20 errors on paper submissions of paid preparers. It includes Paper Returns - 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ through 10/28/2005. Based on some of the errors, these have to be preparers who don't use software. EIC figured incorrectly, taxable amount of SSA figured wrong, child tax credits figured wrong, EIC not allowed because they are not between 25 & 65, tax amount wasn't correct based on TI/FS (can't read table!), etc., etc., etc.

incorrect returns
just one more reason to hire a professional to prepare your return as opposed to your cousin's boyfriend's sister's uncle who works out of his garage.

"paid preparers"
paying your best friend $20 to prepare your return makes them a "paid preparer" but it doesn't make them a professional. If the list were broken down into preparers with a preparer number or EFIN and those without I bet you would see the chart skew heavily towards those that are not "professionals". this type of data can be misleading if the extraneous information is not available with it.
