Extensions or regrets

My position hasn't changed.
Everything that has been posted just cries out "EXTENSION!"

If these are my clients, everybody associated with this mess gets an extension if they expect me to prepare their return.

After tax season is over, and once we're all clear on what it's going to cost and who is going to pay, then I'm looking at every document involved in this transaction before my name goes on any return reporting anything about this sale. You've gotten some excellent insights here, but you're not going to solve the puzzle on this forum. The solution is in the documents, and there may be several of them, beginning with when the deed was changed and ending with when the property was sold.

I have a family feud going on here. NOONE likes one other and talking together for paperwork is out of the question. Never Never had such a mess and problems before! Saw paperwork; no help from lawyer nor IRS and NONE from this family. It has been nothing short of a bad nightmare for me.

If there's a family feud gonig on, you might want to consider whether preparing a return for more than one of them may put you into a potential "conflict of interest" situation down the road. As a matter of fact, that might be your best bet to extract yourself from the scenario altogether, and a darn good excuse (as though you really need one)..

You are very right about this. This family alone has almost made me drink, smoke and surly cuss!!! Never seen anything like it before. (never want to again).
