    e-filed bal due, then 1040X w/refund

I e-filed client's balance due return. He'll send payment with 1040-V by 15 April. He has since located records for additional deductible medical expenses. So now we have a 1040X with a refund due.

What do you instruct for payment? Send original balance due and wait for a refund check? The refund is only a few hundred, so this may be OK with client. But they may ask me about netting the refund against the balance due and sending in the difference. I can foresee a possible jam in the cogs, doing that. What do you think?

When you fill out the 1040X on line 17 it asks amount paid with original return. If he hasn't mailed payment yet have him pay the actual amount due after medical expenses are entered. That amount will be entered on line 17 so no balance due nor a refund to be issued as the end result s/be zero on the 1040X.
