    Stimulus Payment: Survey

    (1) How many returns have you done for clients who were not required to file a return, but filed only to receive the payment?

    (2) Of the returns you identified in Question No. 1, how many were:

    (a) your family or someone else very close to you?

    (b) family of an established client?

    (c) new clients?

    (3) What, if anything, are you charging for these returns?

    (4) Of the returns you have done of this type, how many were electronically filed?

      survey

Have done many only because I quietly offered free clinic for older retired folks who have only ss or va benefits or a combination of the two. All are paper returns; none efiled and no charges. Never hurts to give back. I have been where a lot of these little old folks have been when I came down with cancer and had no insurance.

I understand that the H &R Block office here in rural (Delta) Durant, Mississippi is charging from 50 to 85 dollars. Ridiculous!!

        @20 so far

        (2) Of the returns you identified in Question No. 1, how many were:

        (a) your family or someone else very close to you?

        0

        (b) family of an established client?

        some (not gonna go count)

        (c) new clients?

        some

        (3) What, if anything, are you charging for these returns?

        $20

        (4) Of the returns you have done of this type, how many were electronically filed?

All have or will be as soon as the IRS can accept the "0" income returns. They are telling us that they should be able to accept them soon.

Also, we are going through our files to identify individuals that were in early, before we knew that tax returns would have to be filed. And those that wouldn't normally expect to come in. (ie; retired individuals that we finally had them stop withholding taxes that weren't necessary) So, we are working on calling those folks.

I'm curious, who is the "they" in that sentence? The IRS said they will be accepting them soon?

I gave up when the IRS released Revenue Procedure 2008-21 allowing $1 of income to efile.

                  My Software

My software released the alert today, that we can now file the "Stimulus" returns along with the DD info.
I have been holding mine and advising the clients to wait.

                    None so far

So far no one has asked me to do any, if requested I would probably do them for a minimal fee. Most of the people I have done so far have to file anyway, I do print that nice little form to inform them of how much they should expect.

Proseries issued update I think the 24th of March will be able to efile stimulus returns.

I have not done any so far. I have told several people that asked to call the local senior center where they have a VITA program.

This is what I have been telling people as well. My paying customers are on my case because I am not getting their returns done fast enough, so as much as I would like to help I just feel I can't.

Can a return be filed after April 15 w/out an extension and still qualify for the rebate?

Well what people have been calling "stimulus returns" have been efiled for a while now. They've just had to put $1 in.

Does the IRS now accept $0 AGI, or does the proseries update simply add $1 for you?

I've tried that too, but some people are reluctant to use that service. If folks already go to the senior center, they probably know about the rebate & preparation assistance they can get there. They're likely not gonna seek pro help.

But I had a couple this morning who said they were told to file last year for the phone tax rebate. So they did. Then they said they were told no filing required this year. The clients weren't feeling quite right about that advice, so they stopped in to my office. Not only did we file federal (SS, small pension, some int & divs) to get them the $600 stimulus payment, turns out they were eligible for a $500 property tax rebate from the state, something they would have been eligible for years, but never knew or were informed about.
