Due to the fact that I practice in Iowa, I am not as aware of tax relief for taxpayers affected by Hurricane Rita. Our firm has two clients who used to live in Iowa and moved to Lake Charles, LA, but still mail in their source documents to have us prepare their returns.
From what I am reading, the victims of Rita received some postponed deadlines and would be eligible for certain aspects of the "Katrina Act" that are potentially available to all taxpayers (Charitable Contributions to 100% of AGI, increase in charitable mileage, etc.).
Are there any special tax relief items for the victims of Hurricane Rita? My client has indicated that there was some information regarding tax relief put out by the Red Cross, but cannot locate her copy. Is anyone aware of this information?
Thank you in advance for your response.
