No doubt many firefighters will forget it was already deducted & end up claiming it twice.

Yes, it does exist for NC. It goes on line 49 of the NC-400, you can see the line instructions in that pub for more information on it.

BUT, the instructions are very clear in that the deduction may NOT be taken on the tax return in any form or manner..If you take it you are doing it wrong.
That is how I read and have done it, go back to the person doing the work for the department and ask them to get it right.
Can not and will not deduct on the tax return.

AJ, agian, just asking, because I did returns and took deductions because I was 100% positive these amounts (that should have been excluded) were included in the income on the W-2's. What instructions are you referring to?

No deduction may be taken by these individuals on their income tax returns for amounts that were excluded under these provisions. Nor can you take a charitable deduction for any of the costs that are excluded, but it sounds to me you are saying if not excluded on the W-2 you are just SOL?

            Don't Forget State!!

There are several responses to your thread about the federal deduction and not to take that. But we in NC do have a 250.00 Credit for volunteer firefighters on the state of NC D-400!! (Line 49)

              State!

yes, I was not referring to the other state returns. Sorry if I mixed up state and Federal.
My understanding for Federal purposes is that if it was not done at the employer level the employee/client is SOL, yes. should be fixed back at the firehouse.
I have been wrong before :-(

I'm inquiring as to the Federal

I'm hoping your wrong ONLY because if not I just messed up several returns. Do you recall what instructions you were reading?

On line 21 I type: "Qualified volunteer emergency response pymts not deducted on W-2" - So if they do actually read this, I guess I incriminate myself. Another V-8 bob on the head!

State I'm not out anything because it is an add back, if deducted on W-2 Wisconsin needs to add it back into income.
